ABOUT HARWICH

Harwich is a busy coastal town and international port located on the estuary of the rivers Stour and Orwell in north-east Essex, England. Historically the town is a very important port which has provided a sheltered anchorage for shipping through the ages. The old town of Harwich is a conservation area containing many historic buildings.

There are a number of very good restaurants in the town and Harwich once held the record for most pubs per square mile than any other town in England.  The neighbouring town of Dovercourt, while appearing much more modern, actually merits a mention in the Domesday Book.

Other attractions include the Electric Palace Cinema (one of the oldest in England), The Lifeboat Museum, The Maritime Museum, The Redoubt Fort and the Ha'penny Visitors Centre.

The town has connections with Rayleigh, the voyage of the Mayflower, Lord Nelson and Samuel Pepys. Harwich has good clean beaches, ferries to Felixstowe and the Continent, railway connections to East Anglia and London There are good walks in 'Constable Country' and it is in the beautiful area of the rivers Stour and Orwell. Shops and pubs within 20 yards.
